Abstract

In the contemporary digital economy, organizations increasingly depend on their ability to manage knowledge effectively to support decision-making, organizational learning, and innovation. Despite substantial investments in Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), many organizations continue to struggle to translate accumulated knowledge into informed action and sustained performance improvement. This paper examines the role of KMS, Knowledge Work Systems (KWS), and intelligent techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and advanced analytics, in strengthening organizational decision-making and innovation from a Management Information Systems (MIS) perspective. Drawing on an integrative review of established literature and supported by industry examples from consultancy, healthcare, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors, the paper analyses how KMS provides foundational infrastructure for capturing and structuring knowledge, while KWS enables its analytical, collaborative, and decision-oriented use. The findings highlight that the value of KMS lies not in technological deployment alone, but in its effective integration with work routines, organizational culture, and human expertise. While intelligent techniques enhance knowledge creation, dissemination, and real-time decision support, excessive reliance on automation risks weakening critical judgment and tacit knowledge exchange. This paper discusses a hybrid human–technology approach in which KMS, KWS, and intelligent tools are integrated to support human expertise and reflective practice rather than replace them. It highlights how such integration enables continuous learning, informed decision-making, and sustained innovation, instead of functioning merely as administrative repositories.
